YOGA RAISING FUNDS FOR ANIMALS ALL SUMMER LONG

Essencia Spa & Yoga is once again hosting "Karma Yoga", a unique summer long fundraising program.

For the months of July and August weekly yoga classes will take place on the beach in both Constance Bay and Arnprior. Students can take a class for free or by donation and at the same time enjoy the beautiful scenery.

"We began Karma Yoga last summer," says Tina Lyons, owner of Essencia Spa & Yoga. "I wanted to find a way to give back. I love all animals, I have rescue dogs of my own and this is my way to repay some of the love I've received from them over the years."

Proceeds from the Constance Bay classes will go to the Constance Creek Wildlife Refuge and in Arnprior to Valley Animal Rescue. Last year's sessions were a great success with $720 being raised for the SPCA in Alymer. "We sometimes had 20 people on the beach. People would kayak over, do yoga and kayak home, it was great," says Lyons.

The benefits of Yoga are endless, from building strength, increasing confidence to creating better relationships and compassion. Yoga on the beach increases leg and ankle strength as well as balance and proprioception. Lyons believes it is extremely grounding to be in touch with the earth and the only sound is wind, water and birds. "It really is serene. It brings us back to what is important in life and makes us realize first of all how lucky we are to be living where we live and how really small we are in this endless universe."

Weekly sessions begin in Constance Bay on Tuesday July 17 from 7 PM to 8 PM. The beach access is at 838 Bayviewdrive. In Arnprior the sessions begin on Wednesday July 18 at 7 PM on the beach in Robert Simpson Park. . From beginner to expert, everyone is welcome. For the month of July and August 2011, Essencia Spa & Yoga offered Karma Yoga classes on the beach in Constance Bay. Students were able to take a class for free or by donation while at the same time enjoying beautiful views of the Gatineau hills. The money raised was donated to the SPCA in Aylmer and in total we collected $720.00.

Thank you to all who participated; the weather held out on every single evening, not one was missed. We sure had some gorgeous nights…still water, huge cloud formations; even the tornado watch didn’t faze some of the die-hards. And a huge thank you to Donna P. for putting up with our smiling faces on her beach every Wednesday.

Being a huge animal lover, Tina decided that she would like to do something to give back some of the love that she has received from her rescue dogs over the years. Adopting a rescue dog can be the most rewarding and at the same time challenging opportunity for someone but there is no greater love or appreciation than that of a dog that has found a forever home.
