Here at Essencia we aim to provide all of our students with a space in which they can feel safe, secure, and happy. As a team, we can build a yoga community at Essencia in which all students and teachers feel comfortable as they explore their individual yoga journeys.
To help us do this, please keep in mind the following:
• Arrive about 15 minutes before class begins. This allows instructors time to prepare for class, and gives you time to settle in once you have arrived.
• Should you arrive late, take a deep breath, and then enter the studio and keep noise to a minimum as you settle in
• Take care of yourself and others by coming to class as often as you are able, and by staying home if you are not feeling well.
• Remove your shoes at the door and turn off your cell phone upon entering the studio
• Speak to others and yourself with respectful and positive language
• Refrain from wearing strong perfumes
• Listen to your body

Instructor: Marianne I was introduced to Yoga by my mother at age 12 and continued to use Yoga during a 15 year study of Ballet. After a career change led to Swim Coaching , Yoga played a role in the overall fitness of athletes that I coached. After certification in other fitness training areas I decided that my long time personal practice in Yoga was leading me in a more meaningful direction. I finished the Yoga Certification in 2010 and thoroughly enjoy every class I teach. I still keep up my own practice which I find adds balance to my interest in biking, climbing and running.

Instructor: Sandy
Yoga found me. While attending a retreat inwhich Yoga was included, I was too far from the door to make a discreet exit. A few minutes in a heart opening restorative pose and my life was changed.
I bring my love of stretching, learning, expressing, strength building and mood shifting to the practice I offer. As a Life Coach in my other profession, yoga is one way for me to ensure that I am in my body and inviting it to lead my life.
With my 200 Yoga Alliance training and my certification in Yin Yoga, I am plan on growing older as I stretch into and expand from Yoga.
I look forward to holding the space safe and sacred as you begin or continue your own exploration.
Merisol and Scott completed their 200 hour yoga teacher training in 2011 at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Massachusetts.
Together they have been practicing yoga for several years and it has led to personal discoveries on and off the yoga mat.
Already active in outdoor physical activities, yoga taught them breath awareness and an appreciation for the body and mind's capacity to accept new challenges. It taught them to be present in the moment, and to open themselves to new ideas and experiences.
Scott's practice deepened when he experienced the healing benefits of yoga after a serious motor vehicle collision two years ago.
They believe that yoga offers something for everybody, regardless of experience and physical ability.
Merisol and Scott continue to practice with various teachers and they look forward to teaching, and learning from, their students at Essencia.

Instructor: Tina Lyons Tina fell in love with yoga back in her home country of Germany 15 years ago. Having been born and raised in the 'spa town' of Baden-Baden, she veered into the direction of body work very quickly and became an esthetician after completing her university degree. After moving to Canada in 2002 and working in several spas, Tina opened up her own little spa in Constance Bay in 2006. She has her reiki master, Therapeutic Touch and in 2009 completed her year-long 500 hour Hatha yoga certification at Stillpoint yoga retreat in Picton, Ontario and her Yin certification at Rama Lotus in 2010. Her passion lies in teaching and making others feel good. Oh and of course – Animals. She is a true lover of the outdoors, sunshine, long hikes and water. Her dream is that everyone finds their own true passion in life; yoga has helped her find hers.

Instructor: Rebecca When I first started to practice yoga, I was interested in the activity of it—it felt like a new and interesting form of exercise. Over time, I came to value and love the contrast between the slow pace of my body on small mat, and a racing heart with lots of sweat. I had been used to activity that usually involved distracting myself with music or conversation while my body exercised. The value of being present with my body felt not only more safe, but like an exercise for more than my physical self. The more time I spent at the studio, the more I learned and felt that this physical practice of yoga is only one piece, and that mind and spirit are just as involved as the body in the practice of yoga. This integration of body, mind and spirit is what makes yoga a powerful tool for change both within and outside of ourselves.
A recent transplant to Arnprior, I am a 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher, and received my certification from Hilltop Yoga in Lansing, Michigan. I was lucky to practice and learn with an incredible community there, and look forward to doing the same at Essencia.

Instructor: Megan Justus My yoga practice began with a weekly class. I had heard yoga could help to “quiet the mind”. What came to be true as my practice developed is that stepping on the mat feels like coming home: home to the body, home to the mind, home to the breath. I completed yoga teacher training in June 2011 and enjoy sharing what has become a passion.

Instructor: Glenda O’Rourke I wanted to learn how to run. Programs were available through my workplace, but the more I tried to start running, the more aches and strains I would feel. I thought if I just did one yoga class a week, that would help me with my running. Fast forward a few years and I am a runner, participating in many local runs, but I also developed a yoga practise, and from that practise of two times per week at work, I decided to take hatha yoga teacher training. I completed my training at Rama Lotus Yoga Center in Ottawa. That same year I did a month long teacher training intensive at the Sivananda Yoga Ashram in Val Morin, Quebec. I have been teaching for the City of Ottawa and for some local studios since 2005. This year, I participated as a teachers assistant for Power Yoga teacher training . I enjoy the diversity of yoga styles and look forward to teaching for Essencia.

Instructor: Aly I've always been a teacher at heart. My first job was at Mount Pakenham leading 3 and 4 year-olds through the basics of skiing. After that I got a job at the Nick Smith Center as a swim instructor/ lifeguard, and I still love it there. So I guess it was only natural that enjoying yoga so much would eventually lead to teaching it! But I didn't realize it would become the passion it is now, the way the poses and breath fit together is mesmerizing, and teaching the sequences is pure poetry. Yoga has taught me so much about myself, especially in these past few months being enrolled in a Teacher Training course. My teaching style is a beautiful blend of all my past and present mentors, including Elizabeth Hagan at the Heartsong studio in Renfrew and Tina here at Essencia. But I am still learning, so bear with me in these first few months. After I graduate, I plan to teach here for awhile until the next stage of my path presents itself. For now, I hope to teach and inspire my students and grow with the Essencia yoga community, and never stop learning.

Yoga Basics
This class will take you through the poses step by step. You will learn exactly how to position your body so that you can
feel that you are doing it right even if you aren't feeling very flexible. Also known as Yoga for the Inflexible! In this class,
we will introduce Sun Salutations, deeper hip and shoulder openers and a re-introduction to your long forgotten core.
This is a great class for someone who is new to yoga or has practiced for a short time.
Gentle Yoga Class
This class offers a gentle and healing approach to Hatha yoga. While appropriate for all, this practice can be used in
the case of particular ailments to provide techniques for preventing and managing health concerns. The postures
are designed to soften and gently stretch muscle tissue and to awaken the body's natural structural alignment and
movement. This class involves postural adjustments in every posture to find your body's perfect alignment.
Gentle Yoga/Restorative Class
Restorative Yoga is a therapeutic style of yoga which utilizes props to make it easier for the body to get into certain
poses, and thus, surrender to the pose. Practicing poses using props provides a completely supportive environment for
total relaxation. The more your body is supported in the poses the deeper the sense of relaxation. Relaxation is a state in
which there is no movement, no effort, and the brain is quiet. Typically, Restorative poses are sustained for ten minutes
or for as long as you are comfortable.
Hatha Yoga Class
A classic approach to yoga that emphasizes physical detail and focus. An accessible way to learn the basic postures
and breathing techniques of yoga while restoring your energy, strength and flexibility. A great class for beginner and
intermediate students.
Hatha Soul Yoga Class
This is a wonderful class for someone seeking an introduction to yoga. The focus is on breathing techniques and
postures using a meditative approach. It includes pranayama, extended warm up and savasana and is truly good for the
soul.
Hot Yoga Flow Class
A dynamic form of yoga where one posture flows into the next. This form of yoga develops fitness and promotes
relaxation. It maximizes strength, flexibility and concentration. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of flowing
sequences and breath.
This class is performed in a reduced-heat environment due to the nature of the sequencing which promotes its own
body heat and detoxification.
Karma Meditation Class
Finding the time to sit quietly for a few moments is harder than it seems. Once a month, come join us to quiet your
mind as you begin your day. We will have a half hour of a guided gentle yoga practice, followed by a half hour of
meditation. Donations raised will go to Just Food, an Ottawa-based non-profit that aims to create a food system in the
Ottawa area that is just, vibrant, and sustainable. www.justfood.ca
Kripalu Yoga Class
Meaning "being compassionate" in Sanskrit, the Kripalu yoga approach promotes non-judgemental self-awareness
so that students fully experience the present moment. Practitioners seek physical alignment as well as alignment of
thoughts, feelings and actions on and off the yoga mat. Being "perfect" in a posture is not as important as what it took
to get there. Posture sequences and instructions are non-standardized so no two classes look the same. A variety of
postures (asana), breath awareness (pranayama), and meditation are part of the practice. Each student is in charge of
the intensity, modifications and options are offered, with a focus on safety and creativity.
Power/Vinyasa Yoga Class
Power Yoga is a more vigorous vinyasa flow class that focuses on alignment of the body, fluidity of movement, and
movement with the breath. Each class will begin with a series of sun salutations, followed by a sequence of postures
that is different from one class to the next. Sometimes the most rewarding experiences come from the deepest
challenges, and this class will help you to find your edges on and off the mat as a way to discover the power that you
already have.
Teen Yoga Class
Stop by the yoga studio on your way home from school and learn how yoga
can be a tool for releasing stress, boosting moods, gaining physical and
emotional strength, and having fun. Open to anyone between the ages of
13 and 18. Classes will start on September 18th and run weekly until
December 11th for a total of 13 weeks. Pre-registration class is
required and the cost is $156 plus HST. Space is limited so register early.
Yin/Yang Yoga Class
In all Yang – there is still Yin. In all Yin, there is still Yang. Designed to offer the balancing effects of yin (passive) and yang
(active) styles of yoga. This class draws upon the more internal, quiet and longer held postures, balanced with the more
active, moving and dynamic or heat producing yoga postures to create a holistic body experience .
Beach Yoga
Come listen to the wind, water, and birds in our by-donation beach yoga class. We practice on the small beach between the beach volleyball court and the marina. Money raised will be donated to the Arnprior District Humane Society. Enjoy the beautiful scenery while increasing your strength, balance, and compassion.
Yin
These days, we often associate Yoga with the generation of heat and the movement of our muscles; when done with mindfulness to breath and body, Yang is meditative movement and absolutely fits and feeds some aspects of ourselves. The Yin side of the moon, however, is about cooling down. Instead of working our muscles, we "let go" of that which holds us together. Letting go takes time; Yin postures are held for 3 to 10 minutes. The deep fascia starts to relax, and we can get at the deep emotions and other matter that we may be holding on to. Come and cool down with Yin!
Yin/Yang Yoga
Yin/Yang Yoga is a combination of passive and active asanas (postures). Yin yoga uses long,
passive holds to work on the deep, dense connective tissues of the body--the tendons,
ligaments and cartilage, which are difficult to energize and open. Yang yoga is the active side of
yoga. A beautiful marriage of yin and yang; effort and surrender.
Gentle Yoga
This yoga is open to all ages and fitness levels. Gentle Hatha is a combination of stretching,
breathing techniques and active movement. Beginners welcome.
Hatha Yoga
This yoga is open to all ages and fitness levels. Hatha is a combination of stretching, active flow
and a great exploration of all the yoga postures.
